It’s happening now! As you read this, species across the world are being wiped out; some even before they have been discovered.
Sir David Attenborough once said, “The question is, are we happy to suppose that our grandchildren may never be able to see an elephant except in a picture book?”
The Northern White Rhino is on the brink of extinction or already considered functionally extinct. Ironically it is us humans who have caused the decline and it is us humans who could save this species, through science and AS. If we fail to make this work, then the Northern White Rhino will become another entry on the growing list of extinct species, and will be another addition to the picture book Sir David Attenborough warns us about.
None of us, I hope, want to see the extinction of more species.
Many other species, the Cheetah, the Wild Dog and even the Lion are under great threat in Africa, Further from Africa, Snow Leopards, the Sumatran Tiger, possibly even the Polar bear and many marine species including the Hawksbill Turtle and the Dugong, the list is growing.
We say it’s not good, then get on with our daily lives and forget about it; until the next news broadcast about a species on the brink.
Well, we can make a difference. If we stay mindful of the problems our natural world is facing we will find ways to make a difference, however small. The more people who do this, the greater the impact will be.
Don’t read an article and forget about, don’t watch the news on TV and then dismiss it. Let what you’ve read or seen sink into your mind. Talk about it with your family, friends and colleagues; ideas of how you and others can help will come and you WILL make a difference.
We all know what is happening but we allow our daily lives to overshadow the tragedies we humans are contributing to.
Give it some thought.
